Tenacious D recently played at the gorgeous Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The venue has only been open for just over a year and already the list of artists that have played here is extremely impressive. With amenities like marble bathrooms, fireplaces and lobster food trucks it’s easy to see why this venue has attracted so many popular acts as well as the fans.
First on the stage was DJ Douggpound. He was an entertaining act that combined popular DJ tracks with comedy. This was a nice opener that got everyone laughing and loosened up for more comedy they knew was about to come from ‘the D’.
It was now time for “the greatest band in the world” to take the stage. First, we see Kyle Gass appear with his guitar and then very shortly after we see Jack Black in a trippy tiger themed outfit holding a brightly glowing green orb in his hand. It all made sense when their opening track “JB JR RAP” from the Post-Apocalypto album started to play which talks about “green crystal of Gilgamesh”. Their next song “WOMAN TIME” also talks about the crystal ball and its power. After the crystal ball was put away Jack Black busted out his guitar and was ready to rock!
Fans were treated to a fun mix of tracks from their various albums, but some favorites had to be “Sax-a-Boom”, “Kickapoo” and “The Metal” where the crowd was treated to a gigantic metal robot. Not long after that Jack Black and Kyle Gass had some off mic words and Kyle quit the band. Thankfully, he was back minutes later for the more mellow Tenacious D jam “Dude (I Totally Miss You)”.
During “Double Team” Jack Black took the time to introduce not only all of the members of the band, but also members of their crew. You could really see the appreciation for all of the behind-the-scenes crew that make the show happen. Of course Tenacious D would find a way to make these intros fun as well. The lighting person did a ‘light solo’ which had everyone cracking up and honestly impressed.
Near the end of their set “Tribute” played which had to be a top highlight for the nearly sold-out amphitheater. Who doesn’t want to hear the greatest and best song in the world? Even if it’s only a tribute. Fans were also treated to two encores “Baby” and “Fuck Her Gently” two of their most popular tracks.
Overall, it was an amazing night of rock music and comedy that kept the crowd engaged, laughing and busting out lyrics.
